About London

As the capital of England as well as the entire United Kingdom, London is a city that showcases its great historical value while simultaneously embracing all of the technological advancements that accompany the U.K.'s role as an important industrial nation. London's location along the River Thames in South England has been settled for at least two thousand years: we owe our first written accounts of the city to the Romans, who called it Londinium.

London was one of the more influential cities of Western civilization for much of its history. Even before England's official capital was moved from Winchester in the Middle Ages, London was the most prosperous settlement in the British Isles. London has certainly enjoyed some auspicious periods over the years, as well as some darker ones. At the height of British dominance London sat atop an empire that spanned the entire globe but later, during World War II, large parts of the city were damaged by Nazi bombs.

But London had no shortage of historical sites and esteemed buildings and most of them survived intact. Visitors to London have a grand total of four internationally recognized World Heritage Sites close at hand. They are the historic district of Greenwich, the famed Tower of London, The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and the Westminster site. This last consists of Westminster Abbey, Westminster Palace, and St. Margaret's Church.

Nearby is Westminster Cathedral, a shining example of medieval architecture that is now the largest Roman Catholic Church in England. The Anglican Church is just as well quartered in Southwark and St. Paul's Cathedrals. London also houses some of the largest Muslim, Jewish and Hindu houses of worship in Europe, for good reason. The city has drawn immigrants from just about every land ever colonized by Great Britain, giving it a population that is among the most diverse in all of Europe.

Of course, the most famous sights in London were built by or for the royal families. The royal residence of Buckingham Palace is first on many a tourist's itinerary. There are also many lovely Royal Parks and gardens in London, including Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, and Regent's Park.

London is a very large city with thirty-three official districts, so it can be intimidating to get around. Luckily London has an extensive public transit system with many buses and taxis supplementing the Tube, one of the oldest underground rail lines in the world. The central City of London houses England's busiest financial district yet is still built on the ancient medieval plans. Some of the area's poshest pads and priciest real estate are in West London, close to the near limitless shows, shopping, and entertainment of the West End.
